waking up

He’s three. So anyone with kids knows when waking up a child from napping it can end pleasantly or look a lot like a bloody Hulk scene in the latest Avengers movie.

It’s a crap shoot basically.

And yes. He sleeps with his eyes cracked open.

Live better. Love more.

photograph truth

This is my goal for 2013. To photograph the truth.

To look back twenty years from now and remember them for who they really were and not who I thought the world wanted to see them as.

I want to remember the hair in their face. The peanut butter on their mouths. The fights, the laughter, the tears, the smiles.

2013 will be the year of capturing the mundane, the real beauty that lies in the quiet moments of our lives. I also want it to be the faces with the squinty eyes from laughing so hard. I want it to be the messes, the breakdowns, and the victories. Of course always, the love.

It won’t always be beautiful. They might even be boring to most at times. But they will speak the truth.

What’s your 2013 photography journey goals?

rychelle - i think i grow more in love with you and your work with every image you capture. truth.

Nancy - This keeps going through my mind too. I want to capture the things I won’t remember. Like messes and chaos. I’ll remember the good things and I’ll miss them. And that will make me forget the other side of things, the side that makes it hard in the here and now. I want to remember that side because I don’t want to be the weepy old lady in the checkout lane telling the ragged mom with little kids to “enjoy it”.

Posy Quarterman - I love these, Becky, and I LOVE your goal for 2013; keep it real, yo. My 2013 is to start shooting film again. I’m drinking the kool aid, jumping on the band wagon, goin’ back to my roots, you get the idea… thanks for the continued inspiration. xx

Chandra - Your images, your truth, you’re truly an inspiration.

Kate - I think these are the moments that matter. The centre of your family, the soul of who you are together. Who wouldn’t want to capture that? I’m looking forward to watching you achieve that goal next year.

Greg Lynch - Becky, these are what I call conundrum images – striking in their simplicity, stunning in their impact. Great work….

aileen - 1. learn and do wet plate. 2. come to UT and shoot with Missel. hand-develop what i shoot. print the best.

those are my 2 biggies that i can think of so far. still ruminating.

heidi - I can so relate-this is part of my goal too(that and to shoot more, even if the lighting is super sucky)-I want my work to be raw and documentary like…I want to capture the realness yet in a beautiful way. :) My first attempt will be to take an unposed Christmas card pick, with all 5 kids, wish me luck, cause whatever I get, no matter, I am using it. lol

GOOOOORGEOUS work as always!!!!

amy grace - there is such a beautiful, honest decency about you and your work. a light from within. your excitement is pure, and your talent golden. your goals are such a perfect and natural extension of the gifts you tend to, the love you infuse in your subjects. you inspire me to keep remembering, and noticing…that we do not have to take on the whole world, only feel the magic of the one before us…xoxo

Ginger Unzueta - I love that you’ve made this goal I’ve really reminded myself to do this over the past year and I believe it is how I found my true passion within this art It isn’t about making them be who we want them to be but to see the beauty in them just as they are … Like you said its okay if others find this boring or mundane because its your own beautiful gift and legacy And knowing your work … It could never be boring!!

JACLYN CLAYTON - Huge fan of your work and I love your goal! I think it will be one of mine as well!

kati - love these, becky! that last one is my fave. and i love the goal. i’ve got a few little goals up my sleeve. not sure if i’m ready to say them out loud yet :)

stacy k - My sentiments exactly! Love this post, Becky. (Especially love the photo of your son with the lines of light falling on him and the background. Looks like a painting.) Keep it raw and keep it real … that will be my goal.

rebecca - Love these! My goal is very similar, starting a magazine about just that.

rachaelmarie - this pretty much sums up my philosophy. 2013 goals: shoot more film, shoot more of my family, shoot more for myself, give my clients even more and connect with other photographers.

Elisa - You have no idea how much this post speaks to me, through your words, through your images.

Solene - Becky I can totally relate to your beautiful project. I started mine a couple of weeks ago, it is a 365 gratitude project with Instagram that I called Le livre des Mercis. I want to collect the little details that make our life special and make our heart sing. i love the quote “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” It is what I feel deep inside..
Thank you Beck for letting us take a glimpse at what make your Life special and beautiful.
I am looking forward to following your inspiring journey <3

Amanda - Very inspiring post. I love the truth.

Rachel H - Love this. Such an inspiring goal for us all to work towards. Your children are breathtaking!

amie hansen - is it to late to sign up for the back to basics

Becky - Amie, Just sent you an email. Not too late at all :) Let me know if you didn’t get it.

KG - Do you have a syllabus available. I am fairly advanced film shooter but enjoyed Ryan’s Film on Framed Network and particularly interested in the aspects of light (both natural and studio)

Megan Papworth - Hi! I want in on the workshop if you still have seats. This is exactly what I need as I have been interested in shooting film, but have no idea where to start. Thanks!

Megan Papworth

Clint Carver - Any open seats left for your class this week? What are the times and locations?

It’s never too hot for taco soup

The one problem with summer, well, besides the sweltering heat (duh), is that I have a hard time making soups. Soups to me, are winter foods. To warm me up. They are like a great big blanket giving me a great big hug. They are just too hot for summer.

But there is one soup, I just can’t deny when its on the brain.

Taco soup. It’s delicious all year long, I tell you.

Yes, I sweat like a marathon runner while eating it. With each bite, I told my husband how hot I was, but yet how I.just.couldn’t.stop.eating.

So I instagrammed my delicious crock pot taco soup and got some requests for the recipe.

So here ya go:)

I originally got this recipe from my fabulous friend Mary. Below is her recipe with any changes that I made are included.

Ingredients:
4 frozen chicken breasts (at my house we buy the frozen chicken tenders in the big bag from Costco. So I used 5-6 of those)
1 onion chopped (I use half of one large onion)
3 corn tortilla cut up in strips
1 can of corn (or 1 cup of frozen)
1 can of garbanzo beans (I use 1 can of rinsed black beans)
2 cans of chicken broth
1 can of diced tomatoes (drained)
1 cup of Salsa Verde (this makes it really spicy. We like spice at our house, but if you or your kids are sensitive to spicy foods, you can use half)
1 small can of green chilies
1 tsp. of oregano
1 tsp. of cumin
Salt and Pepper to taste

Prep:
Combine all ingredients in a Crockpot. Cook on low for 7 hours. Stir until chicken shreds. Garnish with cheese, sour cream and tortilla chips.

Yummy. Yummy.
