This week’s theme for our 26 week project, is Color My World. I had a hard time with it actually. I didn’t want it to be literal. So I thought about the things that make me happy. That can brighten my day. And it usually always has something to do with a funny face my kids make, or the fact that little boys would rather keep playing then fix their little crack peeking out of their pants. Or that my Sadie is actually old enough to climb in our tree in our front yard.

Yeah. Its those moments that color my world.

I have been excited and anxious for this post, all at the same time.

Excited because well I love blogging (even though I have not been the best lately) I really do love it. It’s a kind of therapy for me. And excited because this week’s challenge is Self Portrait. I am thrilled because this image kicks off my self portrait project. I won’t be sharing any of them until the project is complete, but I have started and I have really high hopes for it. I have so much to say about it. But will keep that until the end as well. Just know that it will be a completely honest, raw view into who I am. The good. The bad. The lovely and yes, even the ugly.

And to kick it off, I am sharing this ONE image

And anxious because I have a confession. I just added a new baby to the Earl household. And her name is Nikon. She is really pretty and makes me really happy. She is a little different then her siblings in that she is digital and the rest of her siblings are film, but she is here and we love her just the same.

Yes, it’s true. I will be shooting both film and digital. 80% film / 20% digital. Or some days maybe it will be the other way around. The fact is I can’t afford to shoot all the fun things I have in my brain solely on film. Does film have my heart and always will? No question, YES! But I yearn to take more pictures and I yearn to blog more. So I had to ask myself- Is it more important for me to shoot film exclusively and not photograph all the things I want to? Or is it more important to just create and take pictures and do what I love regardless of the medium? I knew the answer right away. I just want to create. I just want to photograph my family. My life.

So expect both. Expect more blogging from me. Expect more of my kids (I know…is it even possible?) and except to see things that make me happy, inspire me, intrigue me, mean a lot to me, make me- me.

Be sure to check out my sweet and awesomely talented friend Stephanie Moore’s self portrait and complete the circle.

I also wanted to share an interview I recently did. I am excited to be apart of the Chic Critique forum doing 4 week long Portfolio Critique’s. I am so excited to be apart of Chic Critique. If you are interested in being apart of this, visit HERE and check out my interview HERE.

It’s that time again. Remember? The 2012 photo project? I can’t believe you forgot already!

Take a look at week 1: View From up Here and week 2: Let’s get Close to freshen your memory.

This month’s technique is: Cinematograph/Video
And this week’s theme is: the people who keep you sane.

I thought of doing a video of my kids, but let’s be honest…they make me crazy so that wouldn’t make much sense. Okay, not totally crazy, but I thought I would change it up this week.

I am able to work for Jonathan Canlas at his film lab a little bit each week. And I pretty much work with the funniest, most awesome people on the planet.

I mean, come on, they helped me with this video for a few hours…yeah we laughed our butts off the whole time, but they helped me nonetheless.

Without further ado- the people who keep me sane…

annnnnnnd the stereotypical white girl who can’t dance, randomly going across the screen, is yours truly. I laugh so hard at myself in this. I suck at dancing and I couldn’t commit to making myself look like a complete fool, so I would dance for a second, feel dumb and then laugh and scurry off the frame. ahhh oh well. good times.

If you forgot already, I am apart of a 26 week project this year. If you didn’t hear about it and are just late to the party, don’t worry, you haven’t missed much. The first of the month was our first challenge and you can find that over HERE.

January’s technique: Unique Lighting
This week’s theme: Let’s get close

My oldest girls, Sadie and Jessie, were born only one year and four days apart. This, I knew, would make them very best friends or worst enemies. Obviously, I hoped for the first. And luckily -so far- its true. They are kind to each other. They laugh with each other. They watch our for each other. They are concerned for each other when the other is hurt. They cry for each other when one is sad.

I love when I can look back at my kids while we are in the car and I will catch the two of them holding hands. Or when I go to bed, I will go in their room to check on them, and one of them has snuck into the others bed and they are fast asleep in each others arms.

I pray they stay this way. I hope they love and adore each other all of their lives.

I have a lot of plans for 2012.

I’m trying to be reasonable…because come on, let’s be honest- how many of us make our lists on January 1st, full of goals, dreams and most of the time unreal expectations. I’ve FINALLY learned to take into account, I am who I am. Because NO, I will never be able to have a set daily schedule. No, I will NOT have my desk perfectly organized every day of the year. And NO, I can’t promise I will never eat french fries ever again to help get my body fit and all Jennifer Aniston looking. Just can’t do it.

So this year I picked a few things that I vow to be better at. If you follow my FACEBOOK, then you saw it. If not….

Ok. I vow to make 2012 the best year of my photography journey. I vow to shoot personal work that means something to me. I vow to start and finish projects I have had in my little brain of mine forever now. I vow to have more courage in asking people I don’t know to be photographed by me. I vow to shoot for me 100% of the time. I vow to make 2012 the year of growth and self discovery. I vow to take the camera out even when I don’t want to. I vow to finally start my project of photographing women going through and being triumphant over adversity. Who is with me?! What do you vow? Put in on your page so you have some accountability! SO LONG 2011!!!

This year is MY year baby!

I was recently invited by some talented ladies to be apart of their 26 week photo challenge. Twice a month sounded reasonable to me. There is no way on this beautiful green earth I would EVER be able to start and finish a 365 or 52 week project. Remember the whole, I know who I am and cannot commit to things I KNOW I would never finish. yeahhh. So I jumped on. I need a little push. Something to challenge me and something I would be held accountable for.

SO, this week (WEEK 1) the technique is “Unique Lighting”. You all know how much I love light! I was a bit subtle with the lighting this week. Maybe the next challenge I will do something more bold. Who knows. And the theme is “view from up here”.

I had a few images that I took for this challenge that I really liked, but when I got to this one it made me feel something. I knew I had to use it.

Jane is rolling over now and it made me realize that pretty soon she will be crawling. And not long after that she will be walking. And then she will grow a little taller, and before I know it, she won’t be my baby anymore. She will be a woman, looking at me, face to face. And I will miss the days when she was just a little baby. Cuddly and teeny.

I am excited for those days when we can shop for prom dresses. And when she is a little older we can trade recipes over the phone and she will have her own babies to love. Really, I am excited.

But for now, I am loving….my view from up here.
