I got home yesterday from a long day at the lab developing and scanning some film. My girls came running to me squealing with excitement.
“Do you have our scans?!” Ahhh one proud mamma!
We bought the girls each their own 35mm HOLGA for Christmas. They had been pleading with us to get them a camera and I wasn’t sure which to get them. Then I thought about the Holga and decided it would be perfect. They don’t have to worry about settings yet. Just need to make sure they are in enough light and shoot away.
I slipped in some old 35mm Velvia slide film, which when processed in C41, makes it cross processed. I thought that would be perfect for the girls. The film was ISO 50 and it expired YEARS ago and so a lot are underexposed and muddy, but OH HOW I LOVE THESE!
I love that they are being creative. I love that they are getting to learn and appreciate film. I love that they love taking pictures. I love seeing they world as they see it.
I thought since the girls were sharing THEIR art, it would be fun to have them say a few things about these:
Sadie:
“I like the one about my bike. I like to take pictures about a lot of things. I like to click the button on the camera.” Then she asked, “umm mom, when are we going to print these?” (good girl!)
Jessie:
“Taking pictures is exciting cause its so fun to take pictures. I felt happy when I saw my pictures on the computer.”

I can’t wait to see them progress and learn and be creative.
Talk about inspiring.
Live better. Love more. Create now.

rachaelmarie - i love, love, love it! your girls images are just beautiful!
i have been letting my kids use an old point and shoot for a couple of years, letting them take ownership of it for a period of time to just be free to fire away. i love how creative their perspectives are and i cannot get enough of seeing the world through their eyes. when i look through the images, i find it incredibly inspirational to for my own art, it encourages a freedom i don’t always embrace as much as i should. and i adore how proud they are of what they have created.
love!
cassidy miller - love this post! Way to go on raising little artists, be
Sara Hasstedt - What a neat idea Becky! Love seeing children excited about creating! I hope you post more of their work in the future!
Imene - I gave my son an old digital point and shoot but I like your idea so much better. This way they can see the result of their work and feel pride.
Thank you for sharing
Shannon Wilkinson - Becky – I think this is such a fun idea. Liv has been asking me for a film camera and I keep putting it off because I just don’t know that she will understand settings. Holga. Duh. Why didn’t I think of that? I love these and I love that you are you teaching them about film and then letting them create through their own eyes.
